How Long Does Stone Engraving Last? (The Arizona Perspective)

A properly sandblasted stone engraving can last 50 years or more with zero maintenance. The design is physically carved into the stone surface — it can’t peel, fade, or wash away.

Why Arizona Is Actually Good for Stone Engraving

Most people assume Arizona’s extreme heat and sun would damage engraved stone. The opposite is often true:

  • Dry climate means no freeze-thaw cycles that crack stone in colder states
  • Low humidity means no moss, mold, or water damage
  • UV light doesn’t affect the engraving itself — only the color fill

What About the Color Fill?

Most engravings are filled with pigment — specially formulated for stone and sandblast work — to make the design pop visually. This is where Arizona’s sun does matter. Standard paint fills can fade in 5–10 years under direct Phoenix sun. At Striking Stone, we use UV-resistant pigment specifically formulated for stone and sandblast work — these hold color significantly longer.

Even if the color fill eventually fades, the engraving itself remains sharp and permanent. You can always have it re-colored.

Comparing Engraving to the Alternatives

  • Painted signs: fade in 2–5 years in Arizona sun
  • Vinyl lettering: peels and cracks in the heat within a few years
  • Laser-printed plaques: surface coating wears off over time
  • Sandblasted stone engraving: lasts decades with no maintenance

Tips to Maximize Longevity

  • Choose granite or dense sandstone for maximum hardness
  • Use pigment fill — specially formulated for stone and sandblast work
  • Place the stone in partial shade if possible
  • Occasional rinsing with water keeps the surface clean
